A diazomethane-ether solution (prepared from 5.0 g of nitrosomethylurea) is added to a solution of 6.0 g of 2-(4-nitrophenyl)benzofuran-7-carboxylic acid in 60 ml of tetrahydrofuran and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture is evaporated to remove solvent and the residue is dissolved in ethyl acetate. The solution is washed with water, dried and evaporated to remove solvent. The residue is washed with ethyl acetate and dried to give 3.82 g of methyl 2-(4-nitrophenyl)benzofuran-7-carboxylate as pale brown powder.
