Procedure
Hydrogen chloride gas was passed through a gently boiling solution of 3-(5-acetamido-2-hydroxybenzoyl)propionic acid (1.2 g, 0.0048 mole) in dry methanol (20 ml) until esterification was complete. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and extracted with chloroform. The extract was washed with sodium bicarbonate solution and water, dried and evaporated to give methyl 3-(5-acetamido-2-hydroxybenzoyl)propionate (0.75 g, 59%, m.p. 145°-147°). (Found: M+, 265. C13H15NO5 requires: M, 265).
