Reaction Steps
Benzalacetophenone (4.2 g, 0.02 mol) and imidazole (1.34 g, 0.02 mol) were warmed over a flame for 30 minutes. After cooling to room temperature, the oil was treated with carbon disulphide to give, as colourless crystals, 2-phenyl-2-(imidazol-1-yl) propiophenone (compound 3) m.p. 75°-76° C.
