5-Isobutyl-6-methyl-2-nitraminopyrimid-4(3H)-one (16.0 g) was mixed with ethylamine acetate (30 g) and heated without solvent at 120° C for 6 hours. The melt was cooled and water was added. The mixture was brought to pH 5 and the precipitated product recrystallised from aqueous acetone to give 2-ethylamino-5-isobutyl-6-methylpyrimid-4(3H)-one (formula VII, R1 = CH3, R = is C4H9, R6 = H, R7 = C2H5) having a melting point of 203°-204° C.
