Procedure
5,8-Dihydro-1,4-dimethoxy-6-ethoxynaphthalene (XII) (3.5 g, 15 mmole) was dissolved in 88 ml hot ethanol and then cooled to room temperature. The suspension was stirred with hydrochloric acid (2N) (17.5 ml) for fifteen minutes. The reaction mixture was poured onto ice water and filtered to give as a tan solid 1,4-dimethoxy-6-tetralone (XIII) (2.67 g, 86.5% yield). m.p. 99°-100° C. (ethanol).
