To 0.93 g (3.2 mmol) of 1-(7-methyl-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-yl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine-3-carboxylic acid in 20 cm3 of chloroform at about 20° C. and under argon atmosphere, was added dropwise 10 cm3 (0.14 mol) of thionyl chloride. The reaction mixture was then heated and stirred at reflux temperature for 1 hour, and then it was cooled to about 20° C. and concentrated to dryness in vacuo (2.7 kPa). The residue was taken up in 20 cm3 of chloform and concentrated to dryness in vacuo (2.7 kPa) to yield 1.25 g of 3-chlorocarbonyl-1-(7-methyl-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-yl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine as a yellow powder which was used directly in the next step.
