1-(p-methoxybenzyl)pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde ethylene acetal chloride (10.0 g) was dissolved in water (100 mL) and was treated with potassium hexafluorophosphate (10.0 g). The precipitate which formed was collected by filtration and dried at 60° C. in vacuo to afford 9 g of 1-(p-methoxybenzyl)pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde ethylene acetal hexafluorophosphate (Formula X: R1 =R7 =H; R2 =4'--OCH3 ; X- =PF6-).
