Procedure

248 mg of 70% m-chloroperbenzoic acid was added to a 20 ml of methylene chloride solution containing 222 mg of 4-dimethylamino-4-hydroxymethyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-1-benzothiopyran dissolved therein, and stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The reaction solution was washed with 5% aqueous sodium thiosulfate solution, saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and brine in this order, then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the crystals were recrystallized from a solvent mixture of ethyl acetate and isopropyl ether. 53 mg of the title compound was obtained as colorless crystals. ##STR33## Melting point: 132°-133° C. IR(KBr)cm-1 : 3245, 1070, 1000
