Ethyl 2-[2,4-difluoro-3-[[2-fluoro-5-(3-fluorophenyl)phenyl]methylamino]phenoxy]acetate (100 mg, 0.2 mmol, 1.0 eq) was dissolved in a mixture of THF (15 mL) and H2O (10 mL). LiOH.2H2O (55 mg, 0.8 mmol, 4.0 eq) was added and the solution heated at 60° C. overnight. The THF was removed under reduced pressure and the aqueous phase extracted with EtOAc. The organic extract was discarded and the aqueous layer acidified with 1M HCl and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and evaporated in vacuo to give the title compound (I(b)) as a white solid (80 mg, 99%).
