To a solution of 4-fluoro-3-[[2-fluoro-5-(3-fluorophenyl)phenyl]methylamino]-2-methyl-phenol (see example 13) (150 mg, 0.44 mmol, 1.0 eq) in DMF (2 mL) was added Cs2CO3 (214 mg, 0.66 mmol, 1.5 eq) and the reaction mixture was stirred for 1 h. Isopropyl 2-bromoacetate (80 mg, 0.44 mmol, 1.0 eq) was then added and the reaction was stirred for a further 1 h. The resulting mixture was poured into water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic extract was washed with water and brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography (EtOAc:petroleum ether, 0:1 to 1:20) to give the title compound as a colourless oil (130 mg, 80%).
