Procedure

2-Bromo-4-methylanisole (20.11 g, 100 mmol, 1 equiv) and carbazole (20.06 g, 120 mmol, 1.2 equiv) were dissolved in 1,4-dioxane (400 mL). Potassium phosphate tribasic (37.15 g, 175 mmol, 1.75 equiv), copper (I) iodide (0.95 g, 5 mmol, 0.05 equiv) and racemic trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (2.4 mL, 20 mmol, 0.2 equiv) were added and the reaction was refluxed for two days. The reaction was cooled to room temperature, then partitioned with ethyl acetate (200 mL) and water (300 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×200 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with saturated brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified over silica gel (150 g), eluting with 3% ethyl acetate in heptanes to give 9-(2-methoxy-5-methylphenyl)-9H-carbazole (13.5 g, 45% yield) as a yellow solid.
