Procedure

A mixture of p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (1.57 g, 8.26 mmol, 0.2 equiv), compound 10 (15 g crude, ˜41.32 mmol, 1.0 equiv) and toluene (300 mL) was refluxed for 1 hour. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was washed sequentially with saturated sodium bicarbonate (100 mL) and saturated brine (100 mL). The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified over silica gel (300 g) eluting with heptanes to give compound 11 (10.8 g, 82% overall yield for 2 steps) as a white solid.
