Procedure
2-Chloro-3-methoxy-5-nitropyridine (8.00 g, 43.4 mmol) was added portion-wise to a 35% solution of methylamine in EtOH (14 mL). After standing for 10 min the mixture was cooled to 0° C. and further 35% methylamine in EtOH (14 mL) was added. After stirring at rt for 20 min ice/water (˜28 mL) was added. The mixture was cooled to 0° C., stirred vigorously and then allowed to stand for 15 min. The resulting solids were isolation by filtration, washed with H2O and dried to yield crude 3-methoxy-N-methyl-5-nitropyridin-2-amine (7.81 g) which was used without further purification.
