The dibenzyl 2-isopropyl-2-hydroxy-3-methylsuccinate thus obtained was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (25 mL), and the solution was stirred in the presence of 10% palladium/carbon (120 mg) under hydrogen stream at room temperature for 15 h. The catalyst was removed by filtration, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give 748 mg of 2-hydroxy-2-isopropyl-3-methylsuccinic acid as oil (quantitative).
