Procedure

6-chloropyridin-3-ol (5.0 g, 38.6 mmol) was dissolved in water (50 mL) and placed under an N2 atmosphere. Na2CO3 (8.2 g, 77.4 mmol) was added followed by iodine (9.8 g, 38.8 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was poured into 1M Na2S2O3 and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic phases were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to provide the product of 6-chloro-2-iodopyridin-3-ol (7.0 g, yield: 70.9%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 7.17 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 7.06 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H). MS (M+H)+: 256/258.
