Procedure

A 15 mL round bottom flask was charged with (+)-(4aR)-(10bR)-8-(4-methylthiophenyl)-10b-methyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,10b-octahydrobenzo[f]quinolin-3-one (20 mg, 0.06 mmol), 0.10 mL of t-butanol, and potassium t-butoxide (20 mg, 0.18 mmol). Methyl iodide (0.011 mL, 0.18 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 h. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, and purified by silica gel chromatography (ethyl acetate eluent) to give 15 mg (72%) of the title compound as a white solid. mp 115°-117°. FDMS: m/e=351.
