A solution of 4-cyano-4-(3-cyclopentyloxy-4-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one dimethyl ketal (0.57 g, 1.6 mmol) in toluene (20 mL) at room temperature under an argon atmosphere was treated with a solution of diisobutylaluminum hydride (1.5M in toluene, 2.7 mL, 4 mmol). After 2 h, a solution of saturated aqueous sodium bisulfite was added and the mixture was extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The organic extract was washed with 5% aqueous sodium carbonate, was dried (potassium carbonate) and the solvent was removed in vacuo to provide an oil (0.55 g, 96%).
