Procedure

4-(3-Cyclopentyloxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-4-(hydroxymethyl)-cyclohexan-1-one dimethyl ketal (0.15 g, 0.41 mmol) in ether (2 mL) was treated with 1N hydrochloric acid (2 mL) and the mixture was stirred vigorously and gently heated for 10 min. The mixture was extracted with ether, the combined organic extracts were washed with 5% aqueous sodium carbonate, dried (potassium carbonate) and the solvent was removed in vacuo. Purification by flash chromatography, eluting with 25% ethyl acetate/chloroform, provided a wax (0.06 g, 56%). Analysis Calc. for C19H26O4 : C 71.67, H 8.23; found: C 71.81, H 8.19.
