Procedure
A mixture of 4 g of 10-methoxybenzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate in 50 mL of 48% HBr was heated at 100° C. for 20 h, cooled to room temperature, and the resulting mixture was poured into 100 mL of 50% sodium perchlorate solution and stirred for 5 min. The precipitate was filtered, washed with ice-water, ether, ethyl acetate and air dried to afford 2.9 g of 10-hydroxybenzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate, (Formula II: R1 =R2 =H;R7 =10-OH; X- =ClO4-) m.p. 218°-229° C.(d).
