To a solution of 7-(4-fluorophenylsulfonyl)-9-iodo-1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-3-benzazepine (2.4 g, 5.5 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 ml) were added sodium triacetoxyborohydride (1.8 g, 8.5 mmol) and formalin (1 ml, 37%, 12 mmol). The mixture was stirred for 2 h without cooling then poured into water (100 ml) and extracted with more dichloromethane (100 ml). The resulting organic layer was washed with brine (100 ml), dried (MgSO4), and evaporated to give the subtitle compound as a white foam (2.4 g).
