A suspension of 3-(3,4-dimethyl-phenyl)-3-oxo-propionic acid methyl ester (1.2 g, 5.8 mmol), tetrahydro-pyrimidin-2-ylideneamine hydrochloride (0.78 g, 5.8 mmol), and potassium carbonate (0.80 g, 5.8 mmol) in ethanol (20 mL) was heated to reflux for 4 h. Water (5 mL) was added to the reaction at room temperature and tan solid was collected by filtration. M+1=256.
