The mixture of 3-[3-(1-amino-1-methyl-ethyl)-phenyl]-2-methylacrylic acid methyl ester (2.0 g, 8.6 mmol), magnesium (0.63 g, 25.8 mmol) in methanol was heated to reflux for 3 h until the starting material was consumed. The mixture was brought to room temperature, filtered and the filtrate was concentrated. The residue obtained was washed with saturated NH4Cl, brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated.
