A mixture of 2-chloro-4-phenylthiazole-5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (134 mg, 0.5 mmol), benzimidazole (Aldrich) (73.8 mg, 0.625 mmol) and LiN(TMS)2 (1N tetrahydrofuran solution, 0.63 ml) in tetrahydrofuran (2 ml) was heated in a micro-wave oven at 120° C. for 30 min. Water (3 ml) was added and the mixture was filtered, washed with water and ethyl acetate, dried in air flow to give 2-(benzoimidazol-1-yl)-4-phenylthiazole-5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (108 mg, 61%). The aqueous solution was concentrated to remove tetrahydrofuran and then extracted with ethyl acetate to recover an additional amount of the product (100 mg, 75% pure). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) 8.84 (s, 1H); 8.16 (d, 1H); 7.81-7.90 (m, 3H); 7.39-7.58 (m, 5H); 4.37 (q, 2H); 1.27 (t, 3H). MS M/z 350 (M+1).
