Procedure

A mixture of 6-bromo-4-chloromethyl-7-hydroxy-chroman-2-one (0.67 g, 2.3 mmol), dry toluene (3 mL), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (1.4 g, 9.3 mmol) and 12-azido dodecanoic acid (0.84 g, 0.35 mmol) was refluxed for 2 h. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, diluted with chloroform (10 mL), quenched with 1N HCl, and the layers separated. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to yield the crude product Purification was done by column chromatography eluting with CH2Cl2 to afford the product (yield 60%). The characterization data were consistent with the proposed structure.
