To a solution of N-(4-hydroxy-2,3,6-trimethylphenyl)formamide (3.00 g, 16.7 mmol) in DMF (30 mL) was added sodium hydride (a 60% liquid paraffin dispersion, 0.74 g, 18.4 mmol) under nitrogen atmosphere at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 10 minutes. To the reaction solution was added 1-(3-bromo-2-methyl-1-propenyl)-4-isopropylbenzene synthesized in Reference Example 108 (4.66 g, 18.4 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. Water was added to the reaction solution and the product was twice extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extract was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was crystallized from ethyl acetate-hexane to obtain 3.70 g (yield 63%) of the title compound. Melting point: 153-155° C.
