Procedure

10 ml of cyclopentene in 30 ml of acetonitrile are added dropwise to a suspension of 38.3 g of mercury(II) nitrate in 80 ml of acetonitrile at 0° C. After 1 hour at room temperature, the mixture is poured into a mixture of 60 ml of saturated sodium chloride solution and 250 ml of water, and the solid is filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried. 26 g of the title compound are obtained as an amorphous powder.
