Procedure

To a solution of 7.2 g of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-ylmethanol in 40 ml of pyridine at 0° C. was added 11.3 g of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in portions. The solution was kept at 25° C. for 48 hours, then poured into water and extracted with diethyl ether. The organic solution was washed twice with water, once with dilute hydrochloric acid and once with dilute sodium carbonate solution. The organic solution was dried with magnesium sulfate and evaporated under vacuum to yield (±)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-ylmethyl p-toluenesulfonate.
