Heat a solution of 4.0 g (14.2 mmole) of (±)-N-[4-[1-hydroxy-2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl]phenyl]methanesulfonamide, 2 ml (32.1 mmole) of iodomethane and 50 ml methanol in a glass pressure tube to 80° C. for 24 hours. Remove the solvent in vacuo. Crystallize the residue from acetone. Recrystallize from acetone to provide the title compound.
