Procedure
To a suspension of 2-chloro-3-(1-piperazinyl)pyrazine (11.7 g, 58.7 mmol; from Example 90, Step 1) in CHCl3 (50 mL) was N-chlorosuccinimid (14.4 g, 108 mmol) added and the mixture was heated at reflux for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and extracted twice with water. The combined aqueous phases were made alkaline (11M NaOH), saturated with NaCl, cooled, and extracted with EtOAc (×3). Concentration of the combined, dried (MgSO4), organic phases afforded 6.12 g (45%) of the title compound as a brown oil which crystallized upon standing: mp 89-97° C. Anal. (C8H10Cl2N4.⅓H2O)C, H, N.
