To an ethanol (5 mL) solution of 2-thiophenecarbonitrile (525.5 mg, 5 mmol), 5 M hydroxylamine hydrochloride (1.1 mL) and 1 M sodium hydroxide (5.5 mL) were added. After the reaction mixture was heated at 80° C. for 3 h, water and dichloromethane were added. The organic layer was dried, concentrated and triturated with hexanes to give a white solid 625.8 mg (88%). 1H NMR (DMSO-d6), δ(ppm): 9.6 (s, 1H), 7.46 (m, 2H), 7.05 (t, 1H), 5.93 (bs, 2H).
