Procedure

To a solution of 7-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-indanone (6) (10.2 g, 37 mmol) and imidazole (3.02 g, 44 mmol) dissolved in DMF (200 ml) was added tert-butyldimethylchlorosilane (6.11 g, 41 mmol) in DMF (50 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature and treated with water (200 ml) and extracted with diethylether (2×200 ml). The combined organic phases were washed with aqueos NH4Cl (300 ml), brine (100 ml) and dried over sodium sulfate. Evaporation gave (7) as a yellow oil which was used without further purification.
