To a solution of 7-methoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylthiochroman-4-one (6.29 g, 20 mmol) in THF (20 ml) and EtOH (10 ml) was added NaBH4 (1.51 g, 40 mmol), which was stirred overnight at room temperature. The reaction solution was added saturated aqueous NH4Cl solution, extracted with CHCl3, and washed with brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by recrystallization with CHCl3-hexane to give 5.33 g (84%) of 4-hydroxy-7-methoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylthiochroman.
