To a solution of L-ascorbic acid in water is added Pd/C (10%). The mixture is subjected to hydrogenation in a Parr hydrogenator at 48 psi, 18° C. for about 2 to 3 days. The reaction mixture is filtered and the filtrate is concentrated in vacuo to afford L-gulonic γ-lactone, after drying at 50° C. in a vacuum oven for about 1 to 3 hours.
