Procedure
A solution of (3,4-dichlorophenyl)acetic acid (16.12 g, 78.5 mmol) in MeOH (500 mL) was bubbled with HCl gas for 5 min. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The solvent was removed by rotary evaporation and the. resulting residue was dissolved in EtOAc (400 mL) and washed with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (200 mL) and saturated aqueous NaCl (200 mL). The organic extracts were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated by rotary evaporation to give (3,4-dichlorophenyl)acetic acid methyl ester (16.22 g, 74.1 mmol, 95%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.50 (m, 2H), 7.23 (dd, 1H), 3.81 (s, 3H), 3.69 (s, 2H).
