To a solution of methyl 4-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylbutanoate (1 eq.) from the previous step in DCM (0.1 M) at −40° C. was added methanesulfonyl chloride (1.5 eq.) and triethylamine (3.0 eq.). The reaction was warmed to −20° C. over 30 min and then quenched with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution. The aqueous phase was extracted with DCM. The combined organic extracts were dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was used in the next step without further purification.
