Procedure
To a well stirred solution of step 1 intermediate (2.5 g, 9.1 mmol) in ethanol (45 ml), aqueous solution of ammonium chloride (4.87 g, 91.0 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was refluxed at 100° C. After 15 minutes iron powder (1.5 g, 27 mmol) was added to it portionwise and was further refluxed for 2 h. After the completion of reaction, excess of ethanol was evaporated under reduced pressure; the reaction mixture was diluted with chloroform (200 ml) and filtered through celite bed. The combined organic layers were washed with water (2×50 ml) and brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield 1.8 g of the product.
