Procedure
A 3-necked roundbottom flask was charged with a solution of 6-methyl-5-nitropyridin-2-amine (20 g, 130.72 mmol) in water (330 ml). To the mixture was added sulfuric acid (23.6 ml). The mixtir was cooled to 0° C. and a solution of sodium nitrite (12.0 g, 173.91 mmol) in water (30 ml) was added dropwise. The resulting solution was allowed to react, with stirring, for 20 at 0° C. and then allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for an additional one hour. The resulting slurry was filtered and the solids collected to afford the title compound.
