A suspension of N-{4-chloro-2-fluoro-5-[(5-nitropyridin-2-yl)oxy]phenyl}-3-(1-cyano-1-methylethyl)benzamide (2.28 g, 5.01 mmol), calcium chloride (1.23 g, 10.0 mmol) and reduced iron (840 mg, 15.0 mmol) in ethanol (35 mL)/water (5 mL) was stirred with heating at 90° C. for 12 hr. After the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, the insoluble material was filtered off through a pad filled with celite, and washed with ethyl acetate. The filtrate and the washing fluid were combined, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was diluted with ethyl acetate (200 mL), washed with water (100 mL×2), 5% aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution (100 mL×2) and saturated brine (100 mL), and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The insoluble material was filtered off, the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the obtained residue was purified by basic silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate). The obtained solution was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (1.58 g, 74%) as a beige amorphous substance.
