Procedure
A mixture of 2-amino-5-chloro-benzoic acid methyl ester (5.55 g, 30 mmol) and 3-nitro-benzaldehyde (4.99 g, 33 mmol) in ethanol (100 mL) was heated to reflux for 2 h. Then the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was washed with ether to afford 5-chloro-2-[(3-nitro-benzylidene)-amino]-benzoic acid methyl ester (7.2 g, 75%) as a white solid: LC/MS m/e calcd for C15H11ClN2O4 (M+H)+: 319.72, observed: 319.0.
