1-(Furan-2-yl)-2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethan-1-ol (20 g, 91.7 mmol) and KH2PO4 (0.4 g, 0.02 mmol) was added to H2O (400 mL) and H3PO4 was added until pH=3.0. The reaction was kept being stirred at 120° C. overnight. After being cooled, NaCl (300 g) was added, and the reaction was extracted with EtOAc, dried over MgSO4, and evaporated to give the crude 4-Hydroxy-2-(3-methoxybenzyl)cyclopent-2-enone and 4-Hydroxy-5-(3-methoxybenzyl)cyclopent-2-enone as black oil: 19 g (crude yield: 95%).
