1-(Furan-2-yl)-2-(3-benzyloxyphenyl)ethan-1-ol (3.97 kg, 13.49 mol) and KH2PO4 (120 g, 0.88 mol) was added to H2O (120 L) and H3PO4 was added until pH=3. The reaction was kept being stirred at 120° C. for 5 hours. After being cooled, NaCl (25 kg) was added, and the reaction was extracted with EtOAc, dried over MgSO4, and evaporated to give the crude 4-hydroxy-2-(3-benzyloxybenzyl)cyclopent-2-enone and 4-hydroxy-5-(3-benzyloxybenzyl)cyclopent-2-enone as black oil: 3.4 kg (crude yield: 85%).
