Procedure

A solution of methyl 1-(4-chloro-3-methoxyphenyl)-4-methylpiperidine-4-carboxylate (500 mg, 1.679 mmol) in anhydrous THF (5 mL) and Et2O (10 mL) was treated dropwise with lithium aluminum hydride (3.36 mL of a 1.0 M solution in THF, 3.36 mmol) while the reaction temperature was controlled with a water bath. The mixture was then stirred at RT for 1 h, treated with Na2SO4.10H2O (1 g), stirred vigorously for 30 min and then dried with anhydrous MgSO4. The mixture was filtered and concentrated to give (1-(4-chloro-3-methoxyphenyl)-4-methylpiperidin-4-yl)methanol as a pale yellow oil (460 mg). The product was used without further purification in the subsequent step.
