Procedure

A mixture of 3-fluoro-4-methoxy-aniline (0.7 g, 4.96 mmol) and diethyl 2-(ethoxymethylene)propanedioate (1.1 g, 4.96 mmol) was heated at 100° C. for 4 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and concentrated under reduced pressure, and then purified via silica gel column chromatography using 1 to 60% EtOAc in hexanes to yield diethyl 2-((3-fluoro-4-methoxyphenylamino)methylene)malonate (1.2 g, 78%). LC/MS: m/z 312.3 (M+H)+ at 1.69 min (10%-99% CH3CN (0.035% TFA)/H2O (0.05% TFA)).
