Acetone → Acetone tetrahydrofuran
Reaction equation
[O:1]1[CH2:5][CH2:4][CH2:3][CH2:2]1.[CH3:6][C:7]([CH3:9])=[O:8]>>[CH2:4]1[CH2:5][O:1][CH2:2][CH2:3]1.[CH3:6][C:7]([CH3:9])=[O:8]Participants

Procedure
R,R′-atracurium besylate mixture (100 mg, isomer ratio −58:36:6) was placed in a vial. 7 mL of THF followed by 0.35 mL of acetone were added to the solid. The mixture was stirred in an ice bath and HClO4 (70% in water, 8 μL, 1.1 eq.) was added and the solution was stirred for 5 hours in the ice bath, during which time a white solid was formed. The slurry was separated through a Buchner funnel to afford 25.8 mg (44.5% yield from the cis isomer) of a white solid (83.5:15.5:1 isomer ratio), melting point 138° C.
