p-Toluenesulfonyl chloride (2.14 mL, 11.2 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methoxyphenyl acetate (1.18 g, 5.61 mmol) in dry pyridine (20 mL) at 0° C. under N2. The reaction was stored at 4° C. for 3 days. The reaction was diluted with water (50 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). The combined extracts were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to afford 2-methoxy-4-(2-{[(4-methylphenyl)sulfonyl]oxy}ethyl)phenyl acetate, as an oil. Product was a 6:4 mixture of desired product and starting material but carried forward regardless. LCMS calc.=387.1; found=386.8 (M+Na)+.
