To a solution of rac-(2R,3R,4R,5S)-3-(3-chloro-phenyl)-4-(4-chloro-phenyl)-4-cyano-5-(2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester prepared in Example 1c (2 g, 4.12 mmol) in dichloromethane (30 mL) was added trifluoroacetic acid (10 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 h, and concentrated. The residue was then triturated with ethyl ether hexanes, concentrated, dried under reduced pressure to give rac-(2R,3R,4R,5S)-3-(3-chloro-phenyl)-4-(4-chloro-phenyl)-4-cyano-5-(2,2-dimethyl-propyl)-pyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid trifluoroacetic acid as a white solid (2.1 g, 94%)
