Step C In a manner similar to the method described in Example 1a, glycine methyl ester hydrochloride (1.25 g, 10 mmol) was reacted with 3-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-3-methyl-butyraldehyde (2.1 g, 10 mmol and triethylamine (2.2 g, 20 mmol) in CH2Cl2 at room temperature for 5 h to give [4-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-but-(E)-ylideneamino]-acetic acid methyl ester as a colorless oil (2.7 g, 97%).
