Procedure
To a solution of N-(4-chloro-3-ethyl-2-fluorophenyl)acetamide (11.0 g, 51.0 mmol) in MeOH (80 mL) is added concentrated HCl (40 mL) before heating at reflux for 16 hours. The solvent is removed from the cooled reaction under reduced pressure maintaining the water bath below 45° C. The residue is cooled with an ice bath before a 3N NaOH solution is added to adjust pH between 9 and 10. The mixture is extracted with ether and dried over MgSO4. The solvent is removed and the residue is purified through a flash chromatography using a gradient of ether/hexanes to give 4-chloro-3-ethyl-2-fluoroaniline.
