Procedure

LiAlH4(0.74 g, 19.5 mmol) was added to [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene 2,7-dicarboxylate (1.50 g 3.9 mmol) in THF (40 mL). The mixture was stirred overnight. Insoluble materials were removed by filtration and washed with hot DMSO. The solution was precipitated in 50 mL of 1 normal (“N”) HCl. The product was collected by filtration to obtain 1.86 g (75%) of pure 2,7-bis(dihydroxymethyl)[1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene.
