Procedure

To a solution of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthylamine (99 mg, 0.68 mmol) in o-dichlorobenzene (1 ml) was added N-(2,3-epoxypropyl)phthalimide (137 mg, 0.68 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at 150° C. for 4 h. The reaction mixture was chromatographed on silica gel (eluting with 0.5% methanol/chloroform) to afford N-[2-hydroxy-3-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthylamino)propyl]phthalimide (108 mg, 47%): MS(ES+) m/e 351 [M+H]+; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.78 (m, 2H), 7.66 (m, 2H), 7.36 (m, 1H), 7.10 (m, 2H), 7.02 (m, 1H), 6.77 (br, 1H), 5.09 (m, 1H), 3.98 (m, 1H), 3.86-3.63 (m, 3H), 2.95-2.60 (m, 4H), 1.91-1.66 (m, 4H).
